Student Story: A Senior Engineer from Russia to Master AI in Amsterdam
Have you ever reached a point in your career where you felt the world was changing faster than your current skillset? Perhaps you’ve spent years mastering your craft, but a new technology, like Artificial Intelligence, suddenly feels like a door you haven’t yet opened.
It is common to feel a bit hesitant about “starting over” or entering a new field when you are already an expert. But what if a career pivot wasn’t about starting from scratch, but about adding a powerful new engine to the vehicle you’ve already built?
From Competitive Coding to Global AI
Meet Anna Kashkina. With six years of experience as a software engineer and a background in high-level competitive programming, Anna was already an industry professional. Originally from Russia, she watched the rapid rise of Machine Learning and AI and knew she wanted to be part of it.
She wasn’t looking for just another certificate; she was looking for a global community and a place to apply her deep technical roots to the future of tech. That is what brought her to Amsterdam Tech.
Learning by Doing, Not Just Reading
At Amsterdam Tech, we believe that the best way to understand complex topics like AI is to build them. Anna took this to heart. One of her first major projects involved creating a neural network (a type of AI modeled after the human brain) that could play Atari video games and eventually beat average human scores!
Her journey reached even higher stakes with her final project, CodeProp. Anna identified a real-world business problem: it usually takes new developers up to nine months to truly understand a company’s code. To solve this, she built an AI-driven platform that guides developers through new codebases using active questions rather than just long blocks of text.
The Power of the Pivot
Even for a senior engineer like Anna, the path isn’t always a straight line. Initially, she focused on making her AI algorithms as “sophisticated” as possible. However, she quickly realized that just giving users the right answers didn’t help them learn; it just made them tired.
By researching how humans actually process information, Anna pivoted. She shifted her focus from “pure tech” to user psychology, ensuring her tool helped developers feel professional and in control. This is the hallmark of a true tech leader: the ability to listen, learn, and adapt.
