4 Things Released This Year That Sound Like Like Sci-Fi In 2022
1. A humanoid robot that folds your laundry (and also builds BMWs)
Figure 03 was unveiled by Brett Adcock’s Figure AI with a video of the robot folding laundry, loading a dishwasher, and sweeping crumbs off a table with fabric-covered hands and fingertip sensors. The same company already has humanoid robots on the floor at BMW’s US plant. The robot runs on a vision-language-action AI powered partly by OpenAI models and Nvidia’s robotics software. It walks at about 2.6 mph and runs for five hours per wireless charge.
2. An AI-designed drug heading into human trials
Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet-owned company led by Nobel laureate Sir Demis Hassabis, is targeting its first in-human clinical trial by the end of 2026, in oncology and immune disorders. In May 2026 the company raised a $2.1 billion Series B. By October 2026, reports surfaced that Hassabis was in talks to raise again at a $50 billion valuation. The pipeline is being designed by the same lineage of models that cracked protein folding.
3. GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 5, both agentic by default
OpenAI released GPT-5.5 as its first “autonomous AI powerhouse,” designed to run multi-step workflows end-to-end instead of answering one question at a time. Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5 in parallel. Enterprise platforms from Microsoft Foundry downward are rebuilding around an agent model rather than a chatbot one. Workflows that took a team of three now take a prompt and a budget.
4. A Dutch chip company just raised $250 million to compete with Nvidia
In February 2026, Axelera AI, based in Eindhoven and led by CEO Fabrizio Del Maffeo, closed what the European press is calling the largest EU semiconductor round in recent memory. Del Maffeo’s line to local press: “It shows that we are here to stay.” The company already serves over 500 customers worldwide and is scaling into AI “factories,” right next to the biggest hardware giant in the world.
Why this matters for a career you have not started yet
If you are between career chapters, the usual advice to “wait and see how AI shakes out” is already out of date. The last twelve months were the shake-out. The next twelve are the build.
Our BS in AI and ML Engineering and Professional Masters in Data Science and Leadership are both designed around this exact window. Open the brochure, pick the lane that lights you up, and start building before the next frontier moves again.
